Everyone deserves a good night’s sleep so we can make the most of the next day.

When we don’t sleep well, it affects our actions, reactions and moods. At worst, a poor night’s sleep can put people in harm’s way when we are behind the wheel or operating heavy equipment. At best, a poor night’s sleep will affect our attitude as we try make it through the day.

Sleep Factors

There are a number of factors that can affect the potential for a good night’s sleep. LifeStyle Home Furnishings can’t help with all of them, but we can get you sleeping on the right mattress!

  • Light. The intrusion of light during sleep can cause disruptions to your sleep-wake cycle. Heavy curtains or a sleep mask can block light to keep it from interfering with your rest.
  • Noise. Things that go bump in the night will also disrupt your sleep. If it is not possible to shut out the noise while sleeping, consider a fan or white noise machine that can drown out unwanted sounds. Earplugs or headphones have also been recommended to keep out the noise – use these with caution.
  • Temperature. For most, a room temperature of around 65 degrees is considered the best for getting a good night’s sleep. Whatever your temperature range, make sure the room is not too hot and not to cold, but is just right for you.
  • Other Environmental Influences. Dust mites, mold, mildew, scents that are too sweet or pungent, alcohol, caffeine, eating too late or too much or too spicy – all of these can take away your chance at a good night’s sleep.
  • Stress. Give yourself a chance to wind down and relax before going to bed. The list will still be there in the morning, and with a good night’s sleep, you’ll be better prepared to tackle it.
  • Proper Mattress. All of the above are important, but if you don’t have the proper mattress, the rest doesn’t matter. Take the LifeStyle SmartSleep Quiz to see which options may be best for the way you sleep.

Mattress Types

Pocketed Coil

Also known as Marshall coils, pocketed coils are not wired together like innerspring coils. Instead, they are encased separately so they work independently of each other. Pocketed coil mattresses are a great option when your partner’s movements in bed disturb your sleep.

Gel Memory Foam

Memory foam, invented by NASA, has become increasingly popular in mattress construction because of its “sink in and be cradled” feeling. Memory foam is an ideal option for side sleepers.

Memory foam alone can trap heat. By infusing gel into foam, which takes longer to take on the temperature around it, and then adding a gel foam layer to memory foam, you get all the comforts of memory foam while staying cooler while you sleep.

Pillow Top

Pillow top mattresses have a layer of padding added to the top of the bed that can be up to several inches thick, and can include layers that improve qualities such as cooling, durability and enhanced comfort levels.

Hybrid

Combining innerspring or pocketed coils and memory foam, hybrid mattresses give you the best of both worlds. By constructing a hybrid mattress in a certain way, manufacturers are able to provide a specific level of comfort.

Innerspring

Innerspring – or traditional coil – mattresses are constructed of steel coils that compress when you sit or lay on the mattress. Generally found in more affordable mattress options, innerspring mattresses can tend to wear faster, and can produce a squeaking sound as the coils touch each other.

Mattress Care

Mattress Cleaning

Using the attachment tool from your vacuum, regularly sweep your mattress to help keep dust from becoming ground in. If you spill something, dab at it with soapy water, but do not get it too wet as moisture can lead to mold.

Certain cleaners can fade or dissolve some fabric and materials used in mattress construction, so if you are going to try something stronger than soapy water, and because mattresses are made with a wide variety of fabrics and materials, test a small area first.

Mattress Flipping and Rotation

One-sided mattresses should never be flipped, but should be rotated four times per year to minimize wear and extend the life of the mattress.

Two-sided mattresses should be flipped and rotated, but not necessarily at the same time. Every three months, flip or rotate, alternating between the two, to minimize wear and extend the life of the mattress.

Memory Foam / Bed In A Box

If your mattress is a memory foam, is delivered “bed in a box” style, or is delivered when temperatures fall below 40 degrees, you must allow time for the mattress to adjust to the surrounding room temperature without forcing it open. Let it expand or unfold naturally.

Protective Mattress Covers

Every LifeStyle Home Furnishings mattress comes with a complimentary protective mattress cover to help your mattress last longer.
